Description from the seller

Le Peintre et son double | Marc Chagall

This work is a lithograph published across a two-page spread in issue No. 246 of the Paris art magazine Derrière Le Miroir. The magazine has been disassembled, and backing support has been applied to reinforce the work.

Artist Profile:
Born in Russia in 1887. Died in 1985. Although Jewish, he later acquired French citizenship. After studying at Bakst's art school, he moved to Paris in 1910. Around this time, he began frequently incorporating scenes and motifs from his hometown into his work. He returned to Russia in 1914, and after the revolution, was briefly involved in art administration, before returning to Paris in 1922. Retrospective exhibitions were held at the Kunstmuseum Basel in 1933, the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946, and the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1947. During World War II, he moved to the United States, but returned to France in 1947. Retrospectives were subsequently held at the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1950, in Tokyo and Kyoto in 1963, and in Zürich and Cologne in 1967 to mark the 60th anniversary of his birth. Flowers, animals, and embracing lovers depicted in vivid blues, reds, and yellows fly through the air, defying gravity. Having lived through the Spanish Civil War, the Holocaust, and two World Wars, he sought to create a myth of eternal love. In addition to oil painting, he worked on book illustrations, prints, and stained glass, and is evaluated as one of the representative painters of this century. There is a Chagall Museum in Nice.
