Jan Sadeler I (with Maarten de Vos) created Ciomus l'Eremita, a XVI‑century incision in landscape format with the engraver’s signature on the lower left, measuring 19.4 × 24.7 cm and weighing 5 g, from the Solitudo sive Vitae Patrum Ercolarum series, in good condition and of Baroque style, origin Netherlands, sold by owner or dealer.
Description from the seller
Beautiful impression on laid paper pasted onto old, deckle-edged paper from a vintage collection, trimmed inside the border. From the series of 29 engravings "Solitudo sive Vitae Patrum Ercolarum," which depicts the lives of the first hermits and desert fathers. The engraver's signature is present in the lower left.
The series to which this print belongs was designed by Maarten de Vos, a Antwerp-born designer famous for his depictions of saints and hermits in scenes of daily life. In this engraving the depiction of the hermit is fully integrated into the natural landscape, intended to portray nature as a space of spiritual challenge and divine revelation.
Biography
Engraver and publisher, eldest of three brothers (with Egidio I and Raffaello I); originally Antwerp; circa 1579 to Cologne, often returning to Antwerp; from 1588-95 court engraver in Munich with Raffaello I; both left Munich in 1595 and moved to Venice via Verona; imperial privilege 1581, renewed 1593; papal privilege granted circa 1598. Jan died in Venice in 1600 and his son Justus took over the business there.
