This painting perfectly illustrates Soulages' explorations of the relationship between black, matter, and light.
Contrary to what one might think, Soulages does not simply aim to paint a black composition.
He builds a true architecture of broad dark bands, vertical and horizontal, that overlap and intersect.
Light appears thanks to three phenomena:
- Transparencies: some dark layers reveal the lighter tones of the background.
- Scraping: the artist removes or moves part of the paint to reveal light beneath the matter.
- Contrasts: the black masses give special intensity to the small luminous surfaces.
The museum also notes that Soulages used unusual tools, notably building painter materials and instruments he made himself.
This work gives the composition its character that is at once monumental, mysterious, and almost architectural.
Pierre Soulages places himself among the great figures who have deeply marked modern and contemporary art, alongside indispensable artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Yves Klein, Zao Wou-Ki, Hans Hartung, Nicolas de Staël, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol or Gerhard Richter.
Carefully packed and protected with insurance and delivery against signature.
