The “Screenprint No. 18” from 1988, attributed to Pierre Soulages, is interesting because it reveals a less well-known facet of the artist: his work with blue, whereas he is mainly famous for his black paintings.
On your copy, the broad deep-blue bands cross and overlap. The traces of matter, tonal variations and white spaces create a dynamic, almost architectural composition.
This work fits within the language of Soulages' gestural abstraction: the forms do not represent an object, but explore the relationships between color, rhythm, matter and light.
What makes this composition remarkable is the use of a deep ultramarine blue, paired with almost black touches.
The large diagonals evoke powerful brushstrokes, while the white of the paper acts as a true source of light.
Thus the work shows that Soulages did not limit his research to black: he also explored how an intense color could alter our perception of space.
Pierre Soulages stands among the great figures who have profoundly marked modern and contemporary art, alongside essential artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Yves Klein, Zao Wou-Ki, Hans Hartung, Nicolas de Staël, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, and Gerhard Richter.
Careful shipping and protection with insured delivery and signature on receipt.
