Artist biography
Eleonora Stol (1946–2022) was a Dutch visual artist, born in Leiden. She trained at the Vrije Academie in The Hague and worked for a substantial part of her artistic career from Amsterdam.
Her oeuvre includes paintings and graphic works in which an expressive, colorful language of form takes center stage. Stol combined figurative representations with abstract elements, strong contours, and a free, intuitive treatment of color and form. Themes such as love, human relationships, dance and dream imagery recur in her work.
The designation ‘La Roja’, which she also used as an artist’s name, refers to her special affinity with the color red. This color, alongside pronounced pink, yellow, green and blue tones, plays a recurring role in her compositions. Her work is characterized by a personal visual language in which painterly spontaneity, figuration and decorative elements come together.
