Artist biography
Eleonora Stol (1946–2022) was a Dutch visual artist, born in Leiden. She trained at the Vrije Academie in The Hague and spent a significant part of her artistic career based in Amsterdam.
Her oeuvre includes paintings and graphic works in which an expressive, colorful language of form is central. Stol combined figurative depictions with abstract elements, bold contours, and a free, intuitive treatment of color and shape. Themes such as love, human relationships, dance, and dream imagery recur in her work.
The designation ‘La Roja’, which she also used as an artist’s name, refers to her special affinity with the color red. This color, alongside pronounced pink, yellow, green, and blue tones, plays a recurring role in her compositions. Her work is characterized by a personal visual language in which painterly spontaneity, figuration, and decorative elements come together.
