DESCRIPTION
Original hand-coloured Renaissance woodcut by Jost Amman (1539–1591), from the Neuw Jag vnnd Weydwerck Buch, published in Frankfurt am Main by Sigmund Feyerabend in 1582.
This remarkable 16th-century illustration depicts a historical wolf hunt, featuring a mounted hunter, another hunter on foot, and numerous hunting dogs pursuing a wolf through a wooded landscape. Hunting nets and traditional trapping equipment are visible in the background.
The detailed composition demonstrates the characteristic precision of Renaissance woodcut engraving, with finely executed lines, expressive figures, and an atmospheric landscape.
The illustration has been carefully hand-coloured in attractive shades of green, brown, blue, and red, enhancing the original woodcut design.
The front of the historical book leaf bears page number 235 and the chapter heading "Vom Jagen" (On Hunting).
Below the illustration appears the historical German proverb:
"Er darf wie ein Wolff in der Hecken."
The reverse, numbered page 236, contains the beginning of Chapter 12, entitled:
"Wie man die Wölff in Wolffsgruben fällen/und mit andern Instrumenten fangen soll."
This chapter describes traditional methods of capturing wolves using wolf pits and other hunting devices.
The original book leaf is printed on both sides and is presented in a traditional frame with a passe-partout. The reverse side of the historical leaf is also visible.
An interesting example of German Renaissance printmaking, early illustrated book production, and European hunting history.
