Born in 1935 in Paris, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul is a French painter, engraver and lithographer famous for his portraits of elegant women recalling the Belle Époque atmosphere and the Roaring Twenties. A pupil of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts of Paris, he exhibited his first works in the 1950s before being named a member of the Salon d'Automne. His distinctive style sits in the lineage of post-Impressionist painters and the Nabi, particularly evoking the influence of Édouard Vuillard and Kees van Dongen. Through his canvases, he captures the grace of female figures wearing large hats, often depicted in romantic settings such as flowering gardens, café terraces or the Normandy beaches. Cassigneul uses a palette of vivid and contrasting colors, dominated by deep blues, intense greens and splashes of brilliant white that lend his scenes a gentle nostalgia. His renown quickly became international, enjoying enormous success in Japan where his works are exhibited permanently, as well as in the United States and Europe. Throughout his career, he also extends his poetic universe to a variety of supports such as tapestry, theater scenery and the illustration of limited-edition art books. Today, his timeless aesthetic celebrating bourgeois femininity and roaming continues to charm collectors around the world."
