Michael Kvium (born 1955) created Deep forest, an oil on canvas from 2002, hand-signed, original edition, sold with frame, measuring 153 × 153 cm including the frame, from Denmark.
Description from the seller
This striking and enigmatic painting by Michael Kvium shows a naked, pale human figure at the bottom of a monumental, dark forest landscape. The person has a notably large, almost bald head, a vulnerable body and an uncomfortable, somewhat distorted posture. With the head tilted downward and the gaze directed at the viewer, the figure radiates both estrangement and a certain melancholy. The dark background, built from a tangle of thin branches, tree trunks and only a few green leaves, forms a claustrophobic setting in which the human figure seems almost to disappear. The strong contrast between the light skin and the deep brown and black tones enhances the dramatic effect of the composition. Kvium combines precise, almost classical painting technique with an unsettling and surreal visual language. The painting raises questions about embodiment, vulnerability, loneliness and the relationship between man and his environment. Precisely because the scene offers no unambiguous explanation, the work remains intriguing and invites personal interpretation.
Michael Kvium (born 1955, Horsens) is a leading Danish painter internationally known for his confrontational, grotesque and psychologically charged figurative paintings. He began his artistic career as an illustrator for the newspaper Horsens Folkeblad and then studied from 1979 to 1985 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Since breaking through in the 1980s he has developed a distinctive visual language, in which deformed human bodies, estranging facial expressions and dark, often theatrical environments are central. His paintings are technically refined and show influences from European baroque painting, but also address contemporary and universal themes such as transience, fear, power, corporeality and the darker sides of human existence. With a combination of black humor, symbolism and uncomfortable beauty Kvium confronts the viewer with aspects of human nature that are usually hidden. His work has been shown internationally, including at the ARoS Art Museum in Aarhus, the ARKEN Museum in Denmark, and the Kunsthal Rotterdam, where in 2018 his exhibition Circus Europa was shown. The Horsens Art Museum owns an extensive collection of his work.
