Sven Hoekstra (1945), Vogel, oil on panel, 2013, original edition, sold with frame, framed size 20 × 16 cm, signed lower right and dated '13', Netherlands, condition: reasonable.
Description from the seller
This remarkable painting has a dreamy and surreal atmosphere. In the foreground we see a man in a dark blue coat raising his hand toward a striking orange-brown bird. The bird seems to be landing on his hand or just taking off. Because of its unusual shape and glossy colors, the bird almost looks like a fantasy creature. The bright blue sky forms a beautiful contrast with the warm color of the bird and the man's dark clothing. In the background there is a calm and deserted landscape, which draws even more attention to the man and the bird. The painting evokes a sense of freedom, longing, and connectedness with nature. At the same time it remains a bit mysterious, allowing the viewer to imagine what exactly is happening.
Sven Alexander Hoekstra (born 1945, Nijmegen) is a Dutch painter, graphic artist, and designer, known for his colorful, magical-realist paintings in which fantasy and reality come together in surprising ways. From 1963 to 1968 he studied graphic design at the Academy for Visual Arts in Arnhem. Initially he worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, after which he increasingly devoted himself to free painting. His oeuvre is characterized by an extremely refined painting technique, meticulously built compositions, and a special interest in human figures, music, dance, and the Dutch landscape. He often places his characters in expansive polder landscapes, where they blend into wonderful, sometimes absurd scenes with a melancholic undertone. Humor, personal memories, and a subtle sense of estrangement play an important role. Hoekstra draws much inspiration from the landscape around Nijmegen and the Ooijpolder. His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions, including a major retrospective at Stevenskerk in Nijmegen in 2020, on the occasion of his fifty-year career as an artist. In 2017 he received the Gelderlander Public Prize. With his recognizable style and rich imagination, Sven Hoekstra occupies a distinctive place within contemporary Dutch figurative painting.
