Sven Hoekstra presents Repetitie II, an oil painting on panel from 2011, measuring 40 × 60 cm (44 × 64 cm including the frame), hand-signed, origination edition, sold by Galerie in the Netherlands and in reasonable condition.
Description from the seller
This painting has a tranquil and somewhat mysterious appearance.
In the foreground we see two men in blue uniforms walking across a large, empty grassy field. One man carries a long staff with a decoration at the end, while the other plays a drum. It seems as if they are part of a brass band or a parade, but because there is no one else present, a sense of silence and abandonment arises.
In the background there are a few sheds and tall trees, which, due to the soft gray colors, almost disappear into the mist. The broad blue sky takes up a lot of space and enhances the tranquil mood. The contrast between the neat uniforms and the simple rural setting makes the painting special. The work raises questions about tradition, loneliness, and performing a shared activity without an audience.
Sven Alexander Hoekstra (born 1945, Nijmegen) is a Dutch painter, graphic artist, and designer, known for his colorful, magical-realistic paintings in which fantasy and reality come together in surprising ways. From 1963 to 1968 he studied graphic design at the Academy for Visual Arts in Arnhem. Initially he worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, after which he gradually devoted himself more to independent painting. His oeuvre is characterized by an extremely refined painting technique, carefully built-up compositions, and a notable interest in human figures, music, dance, and the Dutch landscape. He often places his characters in expansive polder landscapes, where they become absorbed in wonderful, sometimes absurdist scenes with a melancholic undertone. Humor, personal memories, and a subtle sense of estrangement play an important role. Hoekstra draws much inspiration from the landscape around Nijmegen and the Ooijpolder. His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions, including a major retrospective at the Stevenskerk in Nijmegen in 2020, on the occasion of his fiftieth year as an artist. In 2017 he received the Gelderlander Audience Prize. With his recognizable style and rich imagination, Sven Hoekstra occupies a distinctive place within contemporary Dutch figurative painting.
