Marguerite Gerard (Fragonard), L'élève intéressant, an aquatint print from 1790, produced in France, signed on the plate, in discrete condition, measuring 448 × 346 mm.
Description from the seller
Beautiful and rare engraving by Gérard Vidal, after Marguerite Gerard's most famous painting (1761-1837), sister-in-law and pupil of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, now in the Louvre and depicting a girl in an art studio holding an engraving by her brother-in-law and master.
An example with small margins, on heavy laid paper, in good condition, with slight foxing especially below the image, old restoration of a small lacuna above the painting, on the verso stains and, by transmitted light, abrasions and old restorations visible (see photo).
It depicts a young woman, elegantly dressed, seated and intent on looking at a print, in an interior crowded with furniture and various objects; a dog and a cat seem to be playing on the girl's chair. Genre scene with a portrait, perhaps idealized as an allegory, of an unidentified person.
Below the image on the left "M.le Gerard E.le de M. Fragonard pinx", then the title and on the right "Vidal sculp."; further below "Dediée à M.lle Chereau", in the center a barely visible garland with a monogram inside.
Two collection stamps on the reverse.
