Gabriel, Nicolas and Adam Perelle – a suite of 10 seventeenth-century landscape etchings on laid paper.
Description from the seller
Exceptional collection of 10 etchings by Gabriele Perelle, Nicolas and Adam Perelle.
This set comprises a splendid selection of 17th-century copperplate engravings mainly produced by the renowned Perelle family, a dynasty of French artists and engravers formed by Gabriel Perelle (1604–1677) and his sons Nicolas (1631–1695) and Adam (1640–1695).
The collection includes refined pastoral landscapes and detailed architectural views typical of the Baroque period. Details of the Works of Art Landscapes in the Round (Top left): the first two circular prints are classic examples of Perelle production, characterized by lush trees, travelers and idealized classical ruins or allegorical views such as "Le Printemps" (Spring).
Almost all the engravings in this collection are attributed to the Perelle workshop, active in Paris during the 17th century (the High Baroque period). The workshop was led by: Gabriel Perelle (1604–1677): the progenitor, famed for having codified a unique style in landscape drawing. Nicolas and Adam Perelle: his sons, who worked closely with their father, inheriting his branches and continuing the production of views and landscapes.
The works present in the image are divided into two large categories greatly beloved by collectors of the time:
- The Ideal or Pastoral Landscape, which show lush yet domesticated nature, inspired by the Roman countryside. Recurring elements are leafy trees with finely drawn canopies, pedestrians on foot or on horseback, small rivers, and classical ruins in the background. The two circular (round) prints at the top are typical series devoted to seasons or pastoral allegorical themes.
- Architectural and Topographic Views: the Perelles were famous for documenting the great estates of the French nobility.
In particular, the two circular (round) prints visible at the bottom of the plate show the artist’s typical bucolic and archaeological style:
• Round on the left: shows a rural village scene with ancient stone buildings, a mill, and figures in the foreground.
• Round on the right: depicts a harbor or lakeside landscape with classical ruins (surviving columns on the right) and travelers along the shore
