Giacomo Maria Giovannini (1667–1717), after Ludovico Carracci, made this 1694 etching, *San Benedetto spegne miracolosamente il fuoco nella cucina del monastero*, depicting a scene from the life of Saint Benedict.
Description from the seller
Splendid etching after the aquaforte realized by the Bolognese master Giacomo Maria Giovannini. This sheet faithfully reproduces one of the famous monumental frescoes painted by Ludovico Carracci (and by his best students at the Academy of the Incamminati) in the octagonal cloister of the Monastery of San Michele in Bosco in Bologna. The original cycle of paintings, today sadly almost entirely degraded, has come down to us precisely thanks to this precious printing translation endeavor initiated at the end of the seventeenth century.
The scene depicts one of the most famous miracles from the life of Saint Benedict of Norcia. The Saint intervenes to free the monks from a diabolic illusion: the devil had made the religious believe that the convent kitchen was on fire. While the confreres toil frenetically, throwing buckets of water to quell the fictitious flames, the Saint, in prayer, reveals the deception, extinguishing the illusory fire.
• Top right: order number "5".
• Bottom left: "Lod. Caracci dipinse nel Chiostro" (reference to Ludovico Carracci's invention).
• Bottom right: "Giac.o M.a Giovannini del. et sculp." (engraver's signature).
• In the center: indication of the Bologna publisher Marc'Antonio Fabbri
State: Good, Splendid specimen printed with wide margins and original deckle edges. Natural and minimal signs of time, light patina of the era. No invasive restorations. (See photos).
