AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Refined and rare French engraving from the late eighteenth century titled "On nous voit", masterfully executed by Géraud Vidal from an original subject by the renowned genre painter Louis-Léopold Boilly.

The work represents a perfect and sly example of a gallant scene from the Revolutionary/Directory period: two lovers, seated at a table in a richly detailed domestic interior, are suddenly caught by surprise by a third character who peeks in from the door at the background. The composition is rich in period details, from the distinctive bonnet and the empire-style dress of the noblewoman to the presence of the little dog in the foreground, a traditional symbol of fidelity, here ironically associated with the surprise of infidelity or a secret meeting.

At the bottom center is the title, protected by elegant calligraphic flourishes, accompanied by the artists’ names inscribed on the lower margin. An ideal collectible for lovers of libertine and genre art of eighteenth-century France.

Condition: Good (Margins present, slight signs of aging compatible with age, excellent clarity of the ink), as shown in the photo.
