Mihail Chemiakin, also known as Mikhaïl Chemiakine, is a Russo‑American artist born in Moscow in 1943. He develops a distinctive body of work based on fantastical figuration, grotesque forms and theatrical compositions. His characters, often disproportionate, masked or dressed in strange costumes, seem to belong to a carnivalistic and metaphysical universe. His work combines satire, symbolism and reflection on spectacle, representation and human behavior. The themes of carnival, commedia dell’arte and processions occupy an important place in his imagination. Through their frontal stance and their hieratic quality, his figures give his compositions a dimension that is at once unsettling, poetic and deeply narrative.
