Maarten de Vos’s *Saint Patroclus before his Hermitage*, an engraving after de Vos from *Sylvae Sacrae*, dates to around 1594 and is plate signed.
Description from the seller
"Patroclus" is a copperplate engraving by Raphael Sadeler I after Maarten de Vos, plate 17 of Sylvae Sacrae, Monumenta Sanctioris Philosophiae, the series of hermits published in Antwerp around 1594. The saint stands in prayer before his wooden hermitage and a crucifix, in a wooded landscape with waterfowl, cranes in flight and a church spire beyond a stream, with Latin verses below.
The Sylvae Sacrae belongs to the series of hermits and holy solitaries designed by de Vos and engraved by Johann and Raphael Sadeler in the 1580s and 1590s, which joined devotional subjects with detailed wooded landscapes and were widely copied.
Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) was a Flemish painter and draughtsman in Antwerp, one of the most prolific designers of prints of his time, whose drawings were engraved by the Sadelers, the Wierixes, the Collaerts and others. Raphael Sadeler I (1560-1628) was a Flemish engraver who worked in Antwerp, Munich and Venice.
