Board ships were in the days of the sailing ships the largest warships of the navies. There had three or four masts with more than 50 pieces of artillery. Some even had more than 100 copies. The famous flagship of Michiel de Ruyter, De Zeven Provinciën, had 80 on board.

The name refers to the tactic that in the middle of the 17th century was formalized to sail with the warships in a single battle line so that the firepower could be concentrated on one distance. Lighter ships were not useful because their armament fell short.

Due to the many shallows off of the Dutch coast the ships of the line of the Republic, with some exceptions, were equipped with no more than two gun decks. The heaviest British ships were usually equipped with three of these decks. The Dutch ships were also shorter and rounder of construction. They were rarely built according to a special design as warship, but as heavily armed merchantman. Large numbers of hired merchants were adapted until the second Anglo-Dutch war if one needed warships.
