The Port Charlotte 2007 CC:01 is the latest in our thought-provoking range of heavily peated single malts. Each is a tribute to the exceptional, heavily peated spirit that was created in the village, at Loch Indaal distillery, until its closure in 1929.

As with every Port Charlotte the starting point is rich, elegant and thought-provoking spirit. High-provenance, smoky, heavily peated barley married to our slow, Victorian, trickle distillation delivers power with finesse. Here, this fascinating spirit has been matured full term in casks of finest French oak [Quercus robur]. They previously held one of the greatest Eau de Vie, from the western Cognac region. The salt spray of Islay combines with peat smoke to vie with the toasted oak and lemon barley sugar flavours of the wood to give a complex and unbelievably rewarding dram.

Colour:
Pale gold.

Smell:
A rich, fresh and sweet whisky with aromas of smoldering bonfire, a tad barbecue smoke, camphor, honey, white pepper, ginger, earthy tones, ash, old wet rope, dried flowers, tinned pears, red apple, grapes, vanilla, slightly sour tobacco, tasted oak, hint of backing spices (cinnamon, allspice), a hint of smoked haddock, a faint citrus tone (might be lemon oil), green olives? and subtle oak.

Taste:
A powerful, sweet/salty but fresh whisky with aromas of brine, aniseeds, fresh smoke, subtle medicinal tones (railway sleepers, iodine, seaweed), butter, hay, floral tones, licorice, honey, subtle tar, licorice root, pepper, chili pepper, cinnamon, red apples, grapes, cherries, roasted pork, salted caramel, barley sugar, subtle vanilla, smoldering cedar wood and subtle oak.

Finish:
A medium long and slightly drying finish with aromas of smoke, fennel seeds, subtle tannins, honey, citrus peels, icing sugar, candied ginger, subtle medicinal tones and subtle oak.
