Dimitri André

Beautiful old authentic tribal facial mask of the Congolese WOYO tribe. Woyo masks are usually painted with contrasting colours against a white background and are often worn with a full costume made of banana leaves.
The colours used in a Woyo mask have a symbolic meaning and are sometimes painted again to renew the power. On this mask there are painted dots, so called dot painting that underline the spiritual nature of the mask.
Woyo masks are carved for the ritual dances of the ' ndunga ', a male society that is responsible for maintaining the social order. With slight traces of wear and tear this mask is in good condition.
