Edgar Clin

As battery commander and deputy unit leader of the “Sturmgeschützabteilung” (assault  gun unit) 202, Brandner was awarded the German Cross in gold on 15. January 1942. Two days later, Josef Brandner was seriously wounded by a sniper (the bullet went through his neck, just between the esophagus and the larynx). It was only in February of 1943 that he was attested to be ‘fit for the front’ again.   On 17. January 1945, captain Brandner is awarded the honour leaf clasp of the army and the Knight's Cross for the Iron Cross. The promotion to major in February 1945 did not stop Brandner from personally mounting the assault gun again and again. On 30. April 1945, Brandner was awarded the oak leaves for the Knight’s Cross and was arrested as a POW with the remaining troops of his 912 unit on 9. May 1945. He was able to return to Austria from captivity in 1948.
