Beautiful fossil molar from a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). As seen in the pictures, the chewing surface is beautifully articulated and the root is still very much intact.

The molar is 11.5 cm in length and 11 cm from crown to root. The weight is 690 grams.

The woolly mammoth was about 2.7 metres high. It had a large bulge with fat reserves just behind the curved head. It also had thick layers of fat that served as insulation. The thick coat consisted of long, black hair. Under the thick hair there was a layer of finer hairs that insulated the animal. The species fed on tundra plants. With its tusk it could reach the plants from under the snow and ice. The woolly mammoth died out at the end of the Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago.
