Very beautiful sculpture of the Evangelist Marcus, recognisable by the book (The Bible) and the lion, his symbol.
The wood appears to be a kind of pine tree, which partly suggests that it originates from a further remote French province (the south).
The lion head has almost human traits, typical for folk art from the 17th century: one did not know how a lion really looked!
The sculpture was originally polychrome, but still shows only remnants of the white primer and signs of the green blue mantle (see close-ups).
The right hand that was carved separately is gone. Also the feet are broken off due to centuries of weathering. Otherwise in very good state of preservation. At the back the wrought iron ring with which the sculpture could be attached to the wall.
