Blanca Marsal

Born on February 26, 1901 in Barcelona, he was the son of bakers of the Pueblo Nuevo, one of the working class neighbourhoods of Barcelona. "I was born drawing as another is born hunchback," said Ramon Calsina, who since childhood began to study drawing. At the age of 12, he began his studies at the Baixas Drawing Academy, until he was 14 years old when he entered the Escuela de la Lonja (School of Fine Arts). After finishing his studies, after working in the family bakery and having completed his military service, he decided to dedicate himself to painting professionally.

In 1929, coinciding with the International Exhibition of Barcelona, he won the second prize of the Amigó Cuyàs National Scholarship. This award allowed him to travel for several months through Spain. In Granada he met musicians such as Manuel de Falla and Enrique Fernández Arbós and the poet Federico García Lorca. In 1932, Calsina won the first prize of the Amigó Cuyàs International Scholarship, with the money from which she travelled to Paris where she lived for a year and a half. In Paris he worked hard and participated in different exhibitions, including one at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon des Humoristes and the Salon des Superindependents. They also published drawings in the German magazine Der Querschnitt. Despite his success in France, in 1933 he decided to return to Spain. In 1934 he made his first solo exhibition in Sala Parés in Barcelona.

Until the arrival of the Spanish Civil War he reaped many successes and worked in many fields. He made, for example, the sets and posters of the plays  of the Fam theatre of Joan Olivé and La boda de la Xela by Xavier Benguerel. He also worked as a teacher at the School of Fine Arts (Lonja). In the last days of the Second Republic, Ramon Calsina fled to France, although a few days later, faced with the fear of a long exile, he decided to return. He spent months in the bullring of Vitoria, turned into a concentration camp, until he managed to get home. Then it began a very difficult stage with all its guarantors far from the country and in an environment that was hostile. He locked himself in his studio to work preparing each years exhibition and staying away from the artistic currents that were imposed. He married at the age of 44, to Rosa Garcés, with which he had three children. In collaboration with the publishing house La Osa Menor, he published a book of lithographs of Don Quixote and another on the world of bullfighting observed with sarcasm. In 1957, a group of friends and cultural entities took advantage of an exhibition by the painter in the Syra gallery to pay tribute to him and among a few initiatives, a subscription was made to buy a magnificent oil that was donated to the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC) .

The artistic style of Ramon Calsina fits between surrealism and figurative art. Some critics have catalogued his style as magical realism, although the painter himself never wanted to fit into a certain current. The main part of his works are oil paintings and drawings, although he also cultivated the engraving.

 

In 1965 he was awarded the prestigious Ynglada-Guillot drawing prize. He also made the stained-glass windows for the church of Sant Esteve de Granollers and others for the Banco Transatlántico of Barcelona. Calsina has always had a loyal and enthusiastic public, but little official recognition. On the other hand, if you review what has been written about him, he has a considerable importance and there is unanimity in many aspects: an extraordinary office, an exuberant personality, integrity, faithful to artistic and moral convictions. In 1984 this admiration arose and a large group of poets, writers, artists and intellectuals, headed by Avel•lí Artís Gener "Tisner", made a social call to the recognition of Calsina. Among the signatories of this letter, written by Pere Calders, there were half a dozen Honour Awards of the Catalan Letters. As a result of the manifesto, the Caja de Ahorros de Barcelona, with the collaboration of the Generalitat of Catalonia, organized an anthological exhibition. In 1990, another great anthological exhibition was held at the Centro Conde Duque in Madrid, with the collaboration of the City Council. That same year he was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi (a distinction awarded by the Generalitat of Catalonia). He died in Barcelona on November 26, 1992.

In February 2001, a square that bears his name was inaugurated in Barcelona, in the neighbourhood of Pueblo Nuevo. In 2009 the Ramon Calsina Foundation was created, promoted by the painter's family.
