Neat, original and very rare Hofner Ambassador from 1966.
Mainly used for display in the last few decades, because of its rarity.
Everything works properly and sounds very nice.
In short, a beautiful, good and very rare Hofner jazz guitar which will only be worth more over the years.

The guitar is original, only the original and vulnerable three-way pickup selector has been replaced by a white "chicken-head" knob (also from that time). The three-way selector is still for sale via the aftermarket.

The serial number (8463) shows that the guitar was delivered via van Wouw (Amsterdam). Despite the agreement with Selmer who would exclusively sell this flagship for Hofner, some were sold via van Wouw by the end of production (I have seen 3 with similar serial numbers).
The Ambassador was built only for Selmer, the model 4578 later came on the market in Europe in the spring of 1967. Because Selmer was in dire straits, the Ambassadors were not promoted.
Serial numbers underline that fewer than 500 Ambassadors were produced.

The Hofner page notes: “A few exist in private collections but it remains one of the more obscure (Hofner) models…and was one of the best thin line arch tops produced in the 1960’s.”
This was one of the “SELMER” Hofner guitars who were only available to customers of Selmer. It was discontinued in 1968 due to lower than expected sales.
In fact, Hofner was betting on this guitar to sell very well due to their deliberate attempt to “recreate” the Gibson “Barney Kessel” guitar that had been introduced in the USA in 1961 and was widely acclaimed as a “jazz” guitar.  But this guitar was not only styled like a Gibson, it was built like one.
