Jeff Wall: Catalogue Raisonne 1978-2004 covers the gradual evolution of the image concept of Wall. In an allusion of the dictum of Charles Baudelaire about Manet, Wall describes his work as ‘the painting art of modern life’, and that life is one full of tension though also with illuminating beauty. His staged scenes, carefully composed, though somewhere between stylised allegory and naturalism, refer to film stills and advertising, and copy documentary moments from daily life: workers restoring a historical building, a janitor cleaning the floor, a kitchen engulfed in sunlight, the side of a house on the prairie. First and foremost, he is a master storyteller that brilliantly records the anguish in our modern time.

This book is the first systemic compilation of information and material about the individual works by Wall, and contains 120 catalogue mentions, as well as technical and historical data and comments by the artist, who is also known for his writings.
