PHIL LYNOTT and BRIAN DOWNEY met at school in Dublin in the early 1960s. Lynott started with local band Black Eagles, as vocalist and Downey was recruited as drummer. In 1967 Lynott was asked to join SKID ROW by bass guitarist Brush Shiels who brought teenage guitarist GARY MOORE. After a disappointing television appearance, Shiels fired Lynott. Lynott then formed ORPHANAGE with old mate Downey on drums. 
Guitarist ERIC BELL began his career playing in local bands and the last incarnation of THEM featuring VAN MORRISON in 1966.

In December 1969, Bell decided to visit the Countdown Club in Dublin where they saw Lynott and Downey perform and they decided to form THIN LIZZY (named after a robot character from the comic THE DANDY)
THIN LIZZY attract attention in the Irish music press almost immediately. In July 1970 the band released a single, "The Farmer"/"I Need You" that sold just 283 copies.  By the end of the year, Thin Lizzy signed to Decca Records to record their debut album, Thin Lizzy. The album sold moderately. Probably the production had some influence because it doesn't sound very well.
