Large bronze Pirogue - DOGON - Mali 

Brass, cast in the extremely time-consuming ' lost form ' method. 

The Dogon produce many African art pieces in bronze. 
This Dogon canoe is a lovely example. The body of the pirogue has been inspired by the crocodile. 
An oarsman at the prow guides the canoe, two primordial couples sitting in the middle, a second oarsman restrains the canoe. 
The Dogon are a people who, with their cosmogony, esotericism, their myths and legends, and aggression from the outside world, have an interest in tourism and culture. Good condition, some of the tail appears to be missing, but the patina shows it is authentic and probably has been since it was made.
The population numbers around 300,000 souls, living southwest of the loop of the Niger in the Mopti Region of Mali (Bandiagara, Koro, Banka), close to Douentza and part of Northern Burkina (Northwest of Ouahigouya).
