Publisher’s description: 

A collection of photographs, the fruit of many trips between 1977 and 1984 that revisited Latin America, evoking the persistence of farming and Indian cultures. The strength of conviction present in the black and white photographs, their mutating power, the model of Lélia Salgado presenting most of the images in double pages contributed to the success of this book which received the  Prix du Premier Livre Photo, was published in four languages and then sold out in a few months.
Over time, this book has become legendary, and was finally published again accompanied by the texts by Sebastião Salgado, Alan Riding, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester and a text by Claude Nori recounting its genesis.
Sebastião Salgado is today the undisputed master of reportage in the humanist condition thanks to his projects, the aesthetic strength of his photographs, his commitment to oppressed populations an his fight for the planet.
