There are objects that are timeless because of the way they appear to the observer, because of the unchanging charm of the metal and the sober lines, because of the intrinsic value of the technical features, because of the robust and quality construction. The Yashica Electro 35 falls into this category. It has a metallic, almost Teutonic charm, with sober lines softened by rounded corners and edges. The camera dates back to 1966, a period of undisputed dominance of Leica, Contax, Rollei, Zeiss and Voigtlander cameras, leaders of the market and technology. But the Yashica, with this camera, established a technological supremacy in that time. It was the first 35 mm camera with electronically-controlled electromagnetic shutter (hence the name Electro) and, furthermore, with automatic exposure in aperture priority. Its immediate success with critics and the public alike came not only because of this striking innovation, but also because of its high quality, robust construction, the simple beauty of the object, its performance and the very high level of fixed optics, the Yashinon 45 mm f/1.7, its real strong point. The camera was offered at a price equivalent to just over €250 today, which is why it became one of the best sellers of the 1970s. The shutter of the Electro 35, designed and built by Copal to Yashica specifications, shoots at speeds from 30 to 1/500 sec. plus B mode. The 1966 Electro 35 could only work with bulb flashes, but from the later versions it could also work with electronic flashes (X-sync). The other outstanding feature is automatic exposure. The selenium exposure meter on the Electro 35 is mounted on the front of the camera inside a window next to the rangefinder window. The photographer adjusts the aperture on the relevant lens ring and the exposure system adjusts the speed accordingly, with bright red LEDs for underexposure and yellow for overexposure, indicating how to adjust the aperture. The correct exposure is achieved when both are off. Film sensitivity can be selected from 25 to 1000 ASA.
