David Livingstone is perhaps the best known missionary of the Victorian period and one of the greatest European explorers of Africa, whose opening up the interior of the continent contributed to the 'Scramble for Africa'. Livingstone became convinced of his mission to reach new peoples in the interior of Africa and introduce them to Christianity, as well as freeing them from slavery. His anti-slavery position earned him the trust of many communities he met in Africa. Although Livingstone may not have been the first European to see Victoria Falls, when he reached them in 1855, he certainly was the first to bring them to the attention of the Western world.
Condition: A beautifully produced account of Livingstone's life and of his many adventures in Africa in beautiful contemporary binding. Covers with traces of usage, especially along the spine and the edges (see photos). Inside clean with all illustrations present. Binding good and tight. A nice copy.
