The EL 3549 was released in 1962 and should be regarded as a successor of the EL 3542. Philips wanted a new look for its recorders and the EL 3549 is one of these newer models.

The device has 4 speeds and has 4 tracks. By means of a separate preamplifier EL 3787, multiplay and stereo playback is also possible.

The recorder can use 18 cm reels (tapes) and despite the fact that it is a fairly large recorder the device is easy to operate. To the left and right are two levers for track selection and speed selection (also an on/off button). The 4 potentiometers are for volume, tone control, microphone recording and radio/gramophone recording.

In the middle are the tape keys and the small meter. One had to pay big money for the EL 3549 because the device cost FL 698.- in 1962.

The device functions well, only the rewind does not work.

Included are 7 tapes with a variety of background music. Also included is a clapper with index about the music.
