Paris, printed for the Amis des Livres by Motteroz, 1880.

1 large octavo volume (25 x 15.5 cm), olive full morocco binding lined with red morocco (period binding by Chambolle-Duru), preserved covers and spine, adorned ribbed spine, gilded title, gilded fillet rolls and triple fillet frames on the covers, gilded double fillets on the cover edges, gilded fillet rolls and fillets inside, all edges gilded, bookplate from the library of "Paul Villeboeuf", [4]-v-[1]-243 pages (complete). Lightly insolated spine. Nonetheless in very good condition.

Print run of 115 copies, of which numbers 1 to 100 bear the names of the subscribers (copy No. 99 - M. Dupuich).

Superb binding by Chambolle-Duru. René Victor Chambolle (1834-1898) and Hippolyte Duru (1803-1884), either in partnership or alone, were French bookbinders. The collaboration of the two bookbinders dates from 1861, their signature from that time onwards consisting of the combination of their two names, "Chambolle-Duru". They gained considerable fame among bibliophiles in the late 19th century and in particular with the Duke of Aumale, Henri d'Orléans, who gave them the right to be included in 1862 among the one hundred and eighty art books exhibited in his cabinet in the Château de Chantilly, for the members of the Fine Arts Club of Twickenham.

Deluxe edition, illustrated by Millius with 12 out of text drawn and etched compositions in double proof and 81 drawings by Avril, (27 fleurons, 27 culs-de-lampe, 27 ornamental initials) in two versions on Chine paper.

Théophile Gautier (1811-1872) was a French poet, novelist and art critic.

Fortunio is a novel by Théophile Gautier that was first published as L'Eldorado as a serial in the newspaper Le Figaro from 28 May to 14 July 1837, and then as a book under the name Fortunio in 1838. It has since been re-issued numerous times.

A lovely copy.
