STALIN PRIZE award document with original signature by Joseph Stalin (1943).

Printed and Manuscript Document. Signed on two folded folio sheets creating eight pages, with hammer and sickle on cover, a full page bust portrait and original signature of Stalin, dated March 22, 1943.

This is a very rare document given as the “Diploma of the Laureate of the Stalin Award, Third Tier By the Order of the People’s Commissars (ministers) of the USSR, as of the 22nd of March, the year 1943, rewarded by the Stalin award of the third tier.”  It follows with the names of the award recipients and the reasons for the award:  YUTKINA Anna Kondratievna, the group leader of the kolchoz  “Krasny Perekop”, located in the rayon of Mariinsk, within the Kemerov oblast (county), MARKINA Ulyana Ksenofontovna, CERDYUKOVA Matrena Mikchailovna, YVLEVA Anna Mikchailovna, MARKINA Daria Yegorovna, BALANDYNA Lukerya Stepanovna, ROMANOVA Fekla Tichonovna, POVOLYAEVA Aleksandra Yevmentyevna, GAVRILENKO Fedyora Andreyevna, POSCHIDAYEV Matvey Nikitovich, members of the same group, for the development of new techniques and agricultural methods in growing a record potato harvest in the year 1942, a record harvest. 133000 kilograms (1330 tsentnerov = 133000 kilograms)”.  Firmly signed in strong purple  ink, “J. Stalin”.

A rare document of special agricultural interest from the beginning of World War II. During the beginning of 1943, Russia was coping with a potato famine.  This award was given to a group of agricultural engineers who helped to end the famine. 

The Stalin prize was founded in 1941. This was one of the most prestiguous civil awards of the Stalin era. This particular award document bears Stalin’s original signature (later Stalin Prize award documents bore facsimile signatures). One of the most famous Stalin Prize recipients was Dmitri Shostakovich for his composition of the 7th (“Leningrad”) symphony, which was performed in Leningrad during the siege by the Axis powers. This helped enormously to boost morale within the city.

A kolchoz was a collective farm during the Soviet era. The kochoz “Krasny Prerekop” was located near the little town of Mariinsk in Siberia, between Tomsk and Novosibirsk. One of the bigger camps of the “Gulag” system was located nearby.
