The First Automatic Chronograph Movement. Therefore it’s called “El Primero” , meaning “The First.”

The El Primero Caliber 400 was working so flawlessly that it managed to attract the attention of even a well-established company like Rolex. After 1987, Rolex started using the Zenith El Primero Caliber 400 movement in its Daytona series watches, the most valuable watch. The Zenith calibre 400 was the only chronograph movement with automatic winding that passed all the high Rolex standards for a movement. But that did not mean that Rolex just bought the movements from Zenith and put them in the case. Some adjustments were made by Rolex before using the movement. The ancestor of the Rolex caliber 4030 is the Zenith caliber 400. That's why this movement is called Daytona.

• Tachymeter Function (On the Bezel):

"To use the tachymeter, the chronograph is started at a moment of the vehicle in motion, whose average speed is to be measured. When the distance of 1000 units is covered, the chronograph is stopped and the number indicated by the central seconds hand is equal to the average speed of that vehicle."

• Telemeter Function (Inner Scale):

The Telemetre is used for average distance measurement. For example, you wanted to measure the distance of a lightning bolt from you. Start the chronograph as soon as you see the light of lightning. Stop as soon as you hear the sound of lightning. The value you read on the Telemeter scale on the bezel will give you the average distance to the lightning.
