De messen zijn overal in het noorden van de DRC Congo, voorheen Zaïre, in het aangrenzende land te vinden, zoals de Republiek Congo of de Republiek Gabon, de Centraal-Afrikaanse Republiek en Zuid-Sudain. Het is moeilijk te zeggen hoe deze wapens zijn geëvolueerd, het kan zijn dat ze zijn geboren met het gooien van messen. De meeste volkeren die tijdens de kolonisatie in de regio aanwezig waren, kwamen uit het noorden, dus ze kwamen uit de savannegebieden, waar werpmessen werden gebruikt.
