Anita-Praise Nweke delves into her studio practice to explore her personal identity as a black woman and the significance of her cultural hybridity in her journey of self-discovery. Through her artwork, Nweke delves into the realm of Black female identity, investigating the multifaceted nature of the black female experience and the diverse perspectives through which society and the media perceive black women. These perspectives range from the primary definition of black women by white men, the general portrayal of their female experience by white women, and the association of the black experience with black men. Nweke primarily employs Dutch Wax Fabric as the main material in her sculptures, utilizing it to unravel the intricate layers of her identity and to narrate the experiences of black women. The fabric, known as 'Ankara,' serves as a poignant metaphor for the complex interplay between Nweke's black female identity and her dual hybridization.
