Landscape with shepherd, sheep dog and sheep.

Shepherd of Salisbury Plain (1795) is the name of the hero, a shepherd of the name of Saunders, in a tract written by Hannah More, characterised by homely wisdom and simple piety. It was satirised, renamed The Washerwoman of Finchley Common, by William Thackeray in his novel Vanity Fair.

Drawn and engraved by Edgar Barclay (1842 - 1913). Edgar Barclay was born in 1842. and studied art in Germany and Italy. He belonged to a group of English painters who became known as the Etruscans because of their preference for painting Italian landscapes. He split his time between London and Italy for several years, but returned to England in the 1880s and began painting scenes of the Wessex countryside, particularly Stonehenge.
