Russian 84 Silver Cream Jug (I. Gubkin)

Made in Moscow in 1862 in very famous Ivan Gubkin firm. Stamped with marks for 84 Zolotniki (87.5% purity silver), arms for Supplier to the Imperial Court, assayer´s initials A. C (A Svecin – Postnikova catalog No 2113) and maker´s mark for Ivan Gubkin (Postnikova catalog No 2396) – see the last 5 photos. Height with the handle 8 cm. Total weight 225 grams.  Completely authentic, from a private collection.

Condition: Very good collectible, old gilding inside, no repairs, no monograms.

A Brief History of the Gubkin Company

Merchant Ivan Semenovich Gubkin in 1841 opened a Moscow silver jewelry factory. Initially, it employed 30 workers, including craftsmen. In 1852, he invited Academician I. Bortnikov, a specialist in Russian ornamentation, who had studied this type of art for ten years, to work as the main artist. Gubkin is one of the first jewelers who created a Sunday class at the factory for teaching drawing. In 1855, Ivan Semenovich received the honorary title of supplier to the Court of His Imperial Majesty. Participated in the All-Russian industrial exhibitions in 1861 in St. Petersburg and 1865 in Moscow. He took part in the third world industrial exhibition in London in 1862, for which, together with V. Sazikov and M. Belibekov, he made a precious tray, bowls, a bottle, a flask, and bowls for sugar. By 1861, the annual turnover of production was 500,000 rubles. and 88 workers were involved. Compared to the factories of Khlebnikov and Ovchinnikov, this is not much, but the quality, beauty and technique of execution of his products were not inferior.
