(*) AR Penck is a painter, engraver, sculptor, born in 1939 in Dresden and died in 2017 in Zurich. He attempted to join the Dresden Higher School of Fine Arts in 1956, but was rejected, particularly because of his communist convictions. In 1968, Ralf Winkler gave himself the name AR Penck, a pseudonym inspired by geologist Albrecht Penck. It is recognized in the rebellious character of Rembrandt who, like him, was an outsider. AR Penck takes risks working according to his Marxist ideals in the GDR. His works are censored and he will be stripped of his nationality. His work recalls that of the great moderns: Picasso, Kirchner, Klee, Giacometti, but retains a wilder, more raw look, approaching graffiti. Its universe is nourished by colourful characters, symbols, assembled in a wild way. He composes his language to "represent beings in action." He nicknamed this pictorial style: Standart. As soon as he left West Germany in 1980, rejection gave way to success, winning the Rembrandt Prize in Basel in 1981 and in 1985 the Aix-la-Chapelle Art Prize. It will be the subject of a major retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne of Paris and at the Maeght Foundation.
