Edition originale. Cet ouvrage, le plus célèbre consacré à l'art typographique, est illustré de deux frontispices gravés, l'un par Gravelot, l'autre par de Sève (non signé) et de 16 planches repliées au tome I montrant les différents instruments propres à cet art. Le second volume est un catalogue de spécimens des caractères français et étrangers, de vignettes et de musique, gravés par Fournier, dont 4 dépliantes. Ces spécimens représentent le fonds de Fournier qui influencera l'imprimerie européenne jusqu'à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Il intervint particulièrement dans le domaine de l'italique en introduisant dans le dessin de la lettre des empattements "romains" et en réduisant au minimum le nombre de lettres liées qui décelaient encore l'origine calligraphique du caractère.
Le livre lui-même est un régal typographique.
