Hij creëerde in 1873 samen met Jacob Davis, kleermaker, de eerste waist overall uit stevig denim met koperen klinknagels. Al snel droeg iedereen de (oorspronkelijk) functionele kledingstukken: van cowboys tot presidenten. En zo ook de gewone man en vrouw. Men begon te leven in jeans – sterker nog, jeans werd een vorm van zelfexpressie.
