Nato il 6 dicembre 1929, dopo essersi laureato in arte alla Syracuse University nel 1952 (e dopo aver servito nell'esercito degli Stati Uniti fino al 1954), Springer esordì nel campo dei fumetti lavorando alla strip avventurosa di Terry e i pirati, facendo da assistente a George Wundar, che l'aveva ereditata dal suo creatore Milton Caniff.
Dopo aver trascorso gran parte degli anni '60 alla Dell Comics nei ruoli di disegnatore e di inchiostratore su serie horror, mystery o di avventura, Springer passò prima alla DC Comics lavorando sulle serie di Batman, Detective Comics e House of Mystery, e quindi alla Marvel Comics.
Qui, nel corso degli anni, è stato impegnato su Nick Fury Agent of the S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain Marvel, The Avengers, Captain America, Dazzler, Savage She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, Conan the barbarian, G.I. Joe, Transformers e Star Wars (all'epoca in cui veniva prodotto dalla Marvel).
