Merovingian Gilt Silver Fitting

Circa 5th-6th Century AD
This gilt silver fitting is crafted in the form of a cross, featuring attachment loops at each end. The inner cross is composed of an arrangement of four plaques, each with a low-relief stylized face with a down-facing crescent representing a hairline. Large eyes flank a prominent nose, and at the junction, a red gem is positioned, with the reverse side left unworked.
The Merovingian dynasty, which ruled from the 5th to the 8th century, played a significant role in early medieval European history. Originating from the Franks, the dynasty is particularly known for its founder, Merovech, and his descendants. The Merovingians are renowned for their contributions to the establishment of the Frankish Kingdom and the shaping of early medieval Europe.
