Kiev

For your consideration is a set of two historically interesting Kiev cameras from the former Soviet Union:

- a Kiev II, serial number 5610769 with standard Jupiter-8 2/5cm lens number 5501345. With box, owner’s manual in Russian, case and lens cap
- a Kiev IVa, type 2, serial number 6308950 with non-standard Jupiter-3 2,8/35 wide angle lens number 8103072, with special bottom engraving and case.

The cameras have not been film tested and the last 20+ years were on display in a temperature controlled environment.

The shutters have been cleaned/lubricated and appear good at all speeds.
They have not been tested for accuracy on shutter speed testing equipment. 
The self timers and film counters work. The viewfinders are clear and the rangefinders work.

The lenses have not been serviced. They have bayonet mount. 
They are clear of fungus, the diaphragms work and are not contaminated with oil. 
The Jupiter-8 can be classified as ‘good’ because it has signs of use and the lens ring has a few dings. 
The Jupiter-3 is in very good condition.

After WW-II the Zeiss Contax tooling was confiscated by the Russians to serve as compensation for damages.
Together with German engineers, everything was moved to Kiev, Ukraine where production started again. 
The first “Contax” Kiev production runs in 1948 and 1949 had genuine Zeiss Contax parts. 
Following was the Kiev II (1950-1955), almost identical to the “Contax” Kievs except for minor variations such as the logo. 
In 1955 the Kiev II got flash synchronisation, resulting in the Kiev IIa. In 1958 the Kiev 4a replaced the Kiev IIa. 
The Kievs are ‘professional grade’ Soviet developments of the Arsenal factory which also produced optical components for the Russian army.

This is a nice opportunity to own a piece of solid engineering with a silky smooth shutter experience that has earned it’s place in the still not completely uncovered Soviet camera industry.
