Het koninkrijk Benin, onderdeel van het huidige Nigeria, staat bekend om zijn indrukwekkende bronskunst die teruggaat tot de 13e eeuw. De bronzen werken van Benin zijn vooral beroemd vanwege hun vakmanschap, detail en historische betekenis. Ze werden vaak gebruikt als koninklijke insigne, versieringen voor paleizen en tempels, en als rituele objecten. De bronzen beelden uit het oude koninkrijk Benin worden traditioneel gemaakt door een proces dat bekend staat als de verloren-was-methode. Dit proces vereist een combinatie van vaardig vakmanschap en gedetailleerde kennis van metaalbewerkingstechnieken. Deze bronzen hoofden hebben een symbolische betekenis binnen de Benin-cultuur. Ze worden geassocieerd met koninklijke macht, leiderschap en spirituele autoriteit. Sommige hoofden vertegenwoordigen specifieke heersers of belangrijke figuren binnen de samenleving. Dit beeld heeft een prachtig patina en is zeer gedetailleerd bewerkt.
