RARE MASQUE - KWELE / BAKWELE - GABON

Chez les Bakwele, la cohésion interne du village dépendait du prestige et de l'autorité de son fondateur et de l'habilité de son pacificateur.

Installés dans le nord du Gabon et à la frontière de la R. D. Congo, les Kwele sculptent uniquement des masques. Ceux-ci révèlent une grande audace formelle dans une stylisation parfois poussée à l'extrême.
Incarnant les esprits de la forêt ekuk, sous la forme de traits animaux ou humains, ils opèrent dans le cadre du culte du bwete et interviennent dans le contexte cérémoniel de l'initiation ou des funérailles
