The iMac
The iMac undoubtedly marked Apple's return to the forefront. The little machine is powerful, compact and incredibly stylish. During its presentation to the press on May 6, 1998, Apple's goal was clear: to repeat a success as successful as during the launch of the first Macintosh. Once again, Apple dares to present a machine that completely breaks with IT standards.

Leander KAHNEY, in his book Jony Ive – The brilliant designer of Apple, recalls that the code name of the iMac was Columbus, like Christopher Columbus, because it was to represent a new world, free of any heritage.
At the origin of the design, Steve Jobs and especially Jonathan Ive. Priority of the development team: the external appearance. Once the design was defined, all the technical teams had to do was pull their hair out to accommodate all the components... The machine leaves the beige color of the other computers to be adorned with a superb "Bondie" blue and interplay of translucent and embossed materials. This blue-green is that of the sea off Bondi Blue, a beach located in the south of Australia.

The design is not the only innovative element of the machine: for the first time on an entry-level machine from Apple, the processor does not have to be ashamed of its performance. This is a G3, the same one used for Apple's high-end computers. The iMac is equipped with a new type of connection: USB. This connection solution does not lack advantages: it allows you to plug and unplug peripherals without restarting, and allows you to connect both a keyboard and a scanner... The peripherals, very few in number when the machine is launched, are multiply very quickly. USB is even becoming the main format for the general public. Another innovation: the abandonment of the 3″ 1/2 floppy disk drive, which had actually been one of the great new features of the first Mac fourteen years earlier!

The iMac G3, originally released as the iMac, is a series of Macintosh personal computers that Apple Computer sold from 1998 to 2003. The iMac was Apple's first major product release under CEO Steve Jobs following his return to the financially troubled company he co-founded. Jobs reorganized the company and simplified the product line. The iMac was designed as Apple's new consumer desktop product—an inexpensive, consumer-oriented computer that would easily connect to the Internet.
The iMac's all-in-one design is based around a cathode-ray tube display; the G3 processor, components, and connectivity were all included in a single enclosure. Apple's head of design Jony Ive and his team developed a teardrop-shaped, translucent plastic case that was a radical departure from the look of the company's previous computers. The company developed new working methods to finish the computer quickly, and new workflows for designing future products. The iMac eschewed legacy technologies like serial ports and floppy disk drives in favor of CD-ROM.
