Depicting a harlequin-dressed skier atop an icy mountain, in Alpinist, Peter Doig invokes a specific sense of place by featuring the distinctive peak of the Swiss Matterhorn, looming over a deep, snow-covered valley. As is characteristic of Doig’s image-making, the mood of the work rests on a knife-edge. The mountain itself is depicted half in bright sunlight and half in a foreboding shade, with the lone skier, while nonetheless providing a joyful moment of exuberant colour, carrying crimson red skis in a suggestive cross shape on their back.  

Made after Doig’s painting Alpinist (2019–2022), the artwork follows on from his Zermatt series of paintings and prints, begun in 2018, in reprising his interest in depicting skiing. A highly unusual subject in art history, skiers and skiing have become hallmarks of the artist’s oeuvre. Drawing on personal experiences of skiing in Canada where he grew up, as well as time spent in the Swiss Alps in recent years, Doig’s latest iterations of the theme have yielded uncanny works laden with glimmers of not-quite-tangible religious and cultural symbolism. 

Alpinist is undoubtedly the climax of Doig’s revisiting of the ski theme. Celebrated for its depth of texture and extraordinary construction, Alpinist is a tour de force of painterly technique that sets Doig apart from his contemporaries and continues to fascinate his viewers. Exquisitely rendered in high quality Giclée on canvas-like cotton rag, the print is packed with minute detail and the stirrings of barely concealed layers of colour and texture. It is an image that rewards prolonged and repeated consideration.

Translating the work from paint to print for this HENI Edition, Alpinist assumes a poster-like quality, reminiscent of vintage travel advertisements used to entice tourists to the ski resort of Zermatt. Born out of the series of works Doig created following an extended period in the Zermatt home of his friend and artist Heinz Julen, these posters provided inspiration for his compositions. Doig recalled: ‘One of my first mornings in Zermatt I took a picture of a white cat outside my front door with the Matterhorn in the background. It reminded me of Alpine or ski posters, which is important art within that world. It was from this that I decided to make these paintings as my own form of ski posters.’
