This was a commemorative medal given to Japanese soldiers when they won the Sino-Japanese War.

This type of cloth is very rare. It has a map of Manchuria and “Toyama Prefecture,” a place close to Japan, and newspaper articles of the time printed on it. This is the first time I have seen newspaper articles printed on cloth.

-What is "Manchuria 743rd Unit" 満州第七四三部隊 -

The Manchuria Unit 743 (commonly known as “Unit 743”) was one of the special units established by the former Japanese Army in Manchuria (present-day northeastern China), and is considered to be a unit that conducted research, development, and testing of germ warfare and biological weapons. This unit is generally considered to have been involved in war crimes in Manchuria, along with the “Kwantung Army Anti-Quarantine Water Supply Department” and “Kwantung Army Unit 731.

Main Activities

1. germ warfare research and experimentation

Unit 743 is believed to have conducted experiments using pathogens such as plague, cholera, and anthrax, and conducted research to weaponize them. Records indicate that human experimentation was also conducted as part of this activity.

2. production and operation of biological weapons

Bacteria-based bombs and weapons were developed and their actual use on the battlefield was being considered.

3. human experimentation (suspected activities)

It is highly likely that human experimentation was conducted on prisoners of war and local residents, including inhumane practices such as cold resistance experiments, poison gas experiments, and autopsies.

4. nominal “quarantine” activities in the region

Nominally, the main mission of the project was to conduct activities such as “quarantine” and “water supply,” but in reality, research on biological weapons was conducted behind the scenes.

Background and Objectives

At the time, the Japanese military was seeking to gain a strategic advantage over China and other countries through the use of germ warfare and biological weapons. As part of this effort, the vast land and isolated environment of Manchuria was used as an experimental base.

Postwar Treatment

After the war, many of those who served in these units were never held accountable. Some researchers and officials were exonerated in exchange for extradition of information by the U.S. after the war, and it is believed that they played a role in using their knowledge to advance medical and military research.

Notes.

Some of the information regarding the “743rd” is still unresolved and is still being investigated by researchers and witnesses.
